WIND FARM FACTS UTAH
How BIG are they?
As the designs for wind generators have evolved, the wind turbines and the towers that support them have increased in size. As turbines increase in height, they are able to take advantage of greater wind speeds found at higher altitudes. As prop diameters increase, turbines can start producing electricity at slower wind speeds.

How big are they? The wind turbines being planned for New Harmony are some of the largest.  Figures published vary; the range is 400 to 500 feet tall.  (See scaled picture, left.)   How do you get your mind around something that is that big?  We measure in our minds by reference.  You could say they are as tall as a 40-story building. They are taller by a considerable amount than most manmade structures aside from the tallest buildings found in large cities.

What references do we have here, where the tallest manmade objects are barns and silos, where the grandest trees in the forest are at best 150 feet tall? Only the mountains themselves can serve as a reference.
Wind turbines and their immense size are difficult to comprehend in a place where the only reference to the mountains has been the sky itself.
